Stand Up With Us for Abortion Access!

In October of 2011, six young woman stood up to their provincial government in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada to demand abortion services be offered to them on their own soil. Thus stood the Prince Edward Island Reproductive Rights Organization.

My personal struggle attempting to access reproductive freedom in my own province led in step with Prince Edward Island Reproductive Rights Organization to a province wide battle with political officials regarding the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In 1988 The Supreme Court of Canada made a firm decision that to deny a woman the right to abortion care was to interfere with her body and therefore violate the security of her person. PEI is the only Canadian province which does not provide women with safe, accessible abortion care on its own soil and PRRO, along with other like-minded Island women & men, are speaking out about this taboo issue in an attempt to highlight a reality that is in essence a barrier to the realization of full human rights for women everywhere. PRRO do not stand alone against barriers to reproductive freedom. Access to reproductive health care, including abortion services, was recently upheld as an inextricable part of  our Human Right to Health as recognized by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Our work has been noticed.
In both 2010 & 2011, with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through the Canadian International Development Agency,  the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) brought together 8 young Atlantic Canadians who are an inspiration for all of us who dream of a better world. Thus created the Active8 Campaign.

We want to send a strong message to our province, our country and the world that Abortion Access is PRO-WOMAN. A pressing issue that will not go away. Please stand with us and make a pledge on behalf of Abortion Access!

The ‘winner’ receives a total of $1,000 - which will go towards the work our group is doing. It would be a huge asset in assisting low income woman in accessing a right that our province does not provide.
The link to make your pledge to support Abortion Access is located below — along with a list of potential female oriented pledges in case you’re having a mind melt.
  • I will volunteer my time or raise money to support an organization that improve access for women and girls worldwide to comprehensive family planning services and sexual and reproductive health education.
  • I will talk to my peers, family and government officials about the importance of comprehensive and accessible family planning and sexual and reproductive health education and services.
  • I will support an organization (by volunteering or fund raising) that works to increase the presence of midwives, doulas, or doctors at childbirths.
  • I will challenge sexist stereotypes whenever I hear them to help change attitudes about women’s role in society.
  • I will advocate for and support more women in positions of power (like in the government or other decision-making structures)
  • I will work to ensure that women’s voices and opinions are heard and respected in my community
  • I will learn about the impact of violence against women and share what I learn with others
  • I will let my government officials, peers and family know that I support women’s rights and freedoms

Please share! To have a group fighting for abortion access achieve the most votes - will send a strong message to our provincial government that this issue will NOT go away! That we will not allow it to go away!
